<p id="p43004001.07-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v43004001-1">4:1&nbsp;</span>Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John <span class="verse-num" id="v43004002-1">2&nbsp;</span>(although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), <span class="verse-num" id="v43004003-1">3&nbsp;</span>he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. <span class="verse-num" id="v43004004-1">4&nbsp;</span>And he had to pass through Samaria. <span class="verse-num" id="v43004005-1">5&nbsp;</span>So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. <span class="verse-num" id="v43004006-1">6&nbsp;</span>Jacob&#8217;s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.</p>
<p id="p43004007.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43004007-1">7&nbsp;</span>A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, <span class="woc">&#8220;Give me a drink.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43004008-1">8&nbsp;</span>(For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) <span class="verse-num" id="v43004009-1">9&nbsp;</span>The Samaritan woman said to him, &#8220;How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?&#8221; (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) <span class="verse-num" id="v43004010-1">10&nbsp;</span>Jesus answered her, <span class="woc">&#8220;If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, &#8216;Give me a drink,&#8217; you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43004011-1">11&nbsp;</span>The woman said to him, &#8220;Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? <span class="verse-num" id="v43004012-1">12&nbsp;</span>Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004013-1">13&nbsp;</span>Jesus said to her, <span class="woc">&#8220;Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004014-1">14&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43004015-1">15&nbsp;</span>The woman said to him, &#8220;Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p43004016.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43004016-1">16&nbsp;</span>Jesus said to her, <span class="woc">&#8220;Go, call your husband, and come here.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43004017-1">17&nbsp;</span>The woman answered him, &#8220;I have no husband.&#8221; Jesus said to her, <span class="woc">&#8220;You are right in saying, &#8216;I have no husband&#8217;;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004018-1">18&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43004019-1">19&nbsp;</span>The woman said to him, &#8220;Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. <span class="verse-num" id="v43004020-1">20&nbsp;</span>Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004021-1">21&nbsp;</span>Jesus said to her, <span class="woc">&#8220;Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004022-1">22&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004023-1">23&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004024-1">24&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43004025-1">25&nbsp;</span>The woman said to him, &#8220;I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004026-1">26&nbsp;</span>Jesus said to her, <span class="woc">&#8220;I who speak to you am he.&#8221;</span></p>
<p id="p43004027.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43004027-1">27&nbsp;</span>Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, &#8220;What do you seek?&#8221; or, &#8220;Why are you talking with her?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004028-1">28&nbsp;</span>So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, <span class="verse-num" id="v43004029-1">29&nbsp;</span>&#8220;Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004030-1">30&nbsp;</span>They went out of the town and were coming to him.</p>
<p id="p43004031.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43004031-1">31&nbsp;</span>Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, &#8220;Rabbi, eat.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004032-1">32&nbsp;</span>But he said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;I have food to eat that you do not know about.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43004033-1">33&nbsp;</span>So the disciples said to one another, &#8220;Has anyone brought him something to eat?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004034-1">34&nbsp;</span>Jesus said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004035-1">35&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Do you not say, &#8216;There are yet four months, then comes the harvest&#8217;? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004036-1">36&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Already</span> <span class="woc">the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004037-1">37&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For here the saying holds true, &#8216;One sows and another reaps.&#8217;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004038-1">38&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.&#8221;</span></p>
<p id="p43004039.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43004039-1">39&nbsp;</span>Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman&#8217;s testimony, &#8220;He told me all that I ever did.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004040-1">40&nbsp;</span>So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. <span class="verse-num" id="v43004041-1">41&nbsp;</span>And many more believed because of his word. <span class="verse-num" id="v43004042-1">42&nbsp;</span>They said to the woman, &#8220;It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p43004043.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43004043-1">43&nbsp;</span>After the two days he departed for Galilee. <span class="verse-num" id="v43004044-1">44&nbsp;</span>(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.) <span class="verse-num" id="v43004045-1">45&nbsp;</span>So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. <p id="p07009022.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07009022-1">22&nbsp;</span>Abimelech ruled over Israel three years. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009023-1">23&nbsp;</span>And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, <span class="verse-num" id="v07009024-1">24&nbsp;</span>that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009025-1">25&nbsp;</span>And the leaders of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountaintops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way. And it was told to Abimelech.</p>
<p id="p07009026.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07009026-1">26&nbsp;</span>And Gaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his relatives, and the leaders of Shechem put confidence in him. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009027-1">27&nbsp;</span>And they went out into the field and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them and held a festival; and they went into the house of their god and ate and drank and reviled Abimelech. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009028-1">28&nbsp;</span>And Gaal the son of Ebed said, &#8220;Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him? <span class="verse-num" id="v07009029-1">29&nbsp;</span>Would that this people were under my hand! Then I would remove Abimelech. I would say to Abimelech, &#8216;Increase your army, and come out.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p id="p07009030.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07009030-1">30&nbsp;</span>When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009031-1">31&nbsp;</span>And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly, saying, &#8220;Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem, and they are stirring up the city against you. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009032-1">32&nbsp;</span>Now therefore, go by night, you and the people who are with you, and set an ambush in the field. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009033-1">33&nbsp;</span>Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and rush upon the city. And when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may do to them as your hand finds to do.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p07009034.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07009034-1">34&nbsp;</span>So Abimelech and all the men who were with him rose up by night and set an ambush against Shechem in four companies. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009035-1">35&nbsp;</span>And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city, and Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from the ambush. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009036-1">36&nbsp;</span>And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, &#8220;Look, people are coming down from the mountaintops!&#8221; And Zebul said to him, &#8220;You mistake the shadow of the mountains for men.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009037-1">37&nbsp;</span>Gaal spoke again and said, &#8220;Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the Diviners&#8217; Oak.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009038-1">38&nbsp;</span>Then Zebul said to him, &#8220;Where is your mouth now, you who said, &#8216;Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?&#8217; Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009039-1">39&nbsp;</span>And Gaal went out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009040-1">40&nbsp;</span>And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him. And many fell wounded, up to the entrance of the gate. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009041-1">41&nbsp;</span>And Abimelech lived at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives, so that they could not dwell at Shechem.</p>
<p id="p07009042.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07009042-1">42&nbsp;</span>On the following day, the people went out into the field, and Abimelech was told. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009043-1">43&nbsp;</span>He took his people and divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. And he looked and saw the people coming out of the city. So he rose against them and killed them. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009044-1">44&nbsp;</span>Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the field and killed them. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009045-1">45&nbsp;</span>And Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He captured the city and killed the people who were in it, and he razed the city and sowed it with salt.</p>
<p id="p07009046.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07009046-1">46&nbsp;</span>When all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009047-1">47&nbsp;</span>Abimelech was told that all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009048-1">48&nbsp;</span>And Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood and took it up and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men who were with him, &#8220;What you have seen me do, hurry and do as I have done.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009049-1">49&nbsp;</span>So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about 1,000 men and women.</p>
<p id="p07009050.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07009050-1">50&nbsp;</span>Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and captured it. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009051-1">51&nbsp;</span>But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women and all the leaders of the city fled to it and shut themselves in, and they went up to the roof of the tower. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009052-1">52&nbsp;</span>And Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009053-1">53&nbsp;</span>And a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech&#8217;s head and crushed his skull. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009054-1">54&nbsp;</span>Then he called quickly to the young man his armor-bearer and said to him, &#8220;Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, &#8216;A woman killed him.&#8217;&#8221; And his young man thrust him through, and he died. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009055-1">55&nbsp;</span>And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, everyone departed to his home. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009056-1">56&nbsp;</span>Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009057-1">57&nbsp;</span>And God also made all the evil of the men of Shechem return on their heads, and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal. <p id="p43004027.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43004027-1">27&nbsp;</span>Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, &#8220;What do you seek?&#8221; or, &#8220;Why are you talking with her?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004028-1">28&nbsp;</span>So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, <span class="verse-num" id="v43004029-1">29&nbsp;</span>&#8220;Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004030-1">30&nbsp;</span>They went out of the town and were coming to him.</p>
<p id="p43004031.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43004031-1">31&nbsp;</span>Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, &#8220;Rabbi, eat.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004032-1">32&nbsp;</span>But he said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;I have food to eat that you do not know about.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43004033-1">33&nbsp;</span>So the disciples said to one another, &#8220;Has anyone brought him something to eat?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004034-1">34&nbsp;</span>Jesus said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004035-1">35&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Do you not say, &#8216;There are yet four months, then comes the harvest&#8217;? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004036-1">36&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Already</span> <span class="woc">the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004037-1">37&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For here the saying holds true, &#8216;One sows and another reaps.&#8217;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43004038-1">38&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.&#8221;</span></p>
<p id="p43004039.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43004039-1">39&nbsp;</span>Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman&#8217;s testimony, &#8220;He told me all that I ever did.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43004040-1">40&nbsp;</span>So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. <span class="verse-num" id="v43004041-1">41&nbsp;</span>And many more believed because of his word. <span class="verse-num" id="v43004042-1">42&nbsp;</span>They said to the woman, &#8220;It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p43004043.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43004043-1">43&nbsp;</span>After the two days he departed for Galilee. <span class="verse-num" id="v43004044-1">44&nbsp;</span>(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.) <span class="verse-num" id="v43004045-1">45&nbsp;</span>So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. <p id="p43003001.06-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v43003001-1">3:1&nbsp;</span>Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003002-1">2&nbsp;</span>This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, &#8220;Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43003003-1">3&nbsp;</span>Jesus answered him, <span class="woc">&#8220;Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43003004-1">4&nbsp;</span>Nicodemus said to him, &#8220;How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother&#8217;s womb and be born?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43003005-1">5&nbsp;</span>Jesus answered, <span class="woc">&#8220;Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003006-1">6&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003007-1">7&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Do not marvel that I said to you, &#8216;You must be born again.&#8217;</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003008-1">8&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.&#8221;</span></p>
<p id="p43003009.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43003009-1">9&nbsp;</span>Nicodemus said to him, &#8220;How can these things be?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43003010-1">10&nbsp;</span>Jesus answered him, <span class="woc">&#8220;Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things?</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003011-1">11&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003012-1">12&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003013-1">13&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003014-1">14&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003015-1">15&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.</span></p>
<p id="p43003016.07-1"><span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003016-1">16&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">&#8220;For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003017-1">17&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003018-1">18&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003019-1">19&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003020-1">20&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.</span> <span class="verse-num woc" id="v43003021-1">21&nbsp;</span><span class="woc">But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.&#8221;</span></p>
<p id="p43003022.06-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43003022-1">22&nbsp;</span>After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003023-1">23&nbsp;</span>John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized <span class="verse-num" id="v43003024-1">24&nbsp;</span>(for John had not yet been put in prison).</p>
<p id="p43003025.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43003025-1">25&nbsp;</span>Now a discussion arose between some of John&#8217;s disciples and a Jew over purification. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003026-1">26&nbsp;</span>And they came to John and said to him, &#8220;Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness&#8212;look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43003027-1">27&nbsp;</span>John answered, &#8220;A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003028-1">28&nbsp;</span>You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, &#8216;I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v43003029-1">29&nbsp;</span>The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom&#8217;s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003030-1">30&nbsp;</span>He must increase, but I must decrease.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p43003031.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43003031-1">31&nbsp;</span>He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003032-1">32&nbsp;</span>He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003033-1">33&nbsp;</span>Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003034-1">34&nbsp;</span>For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003035-1">35&nbsp;</span>The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003036-1">36&nbsp;</span>Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. <p id="p07008029.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07008029-1">29&nbsp;</span>Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008030-1">30&nbsp;</span>Now Gideon had seventy sons, his own offspring, for he had many wives. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008031-1">31&nbsp;</span>And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he called his name Abimelech. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008032-1">32&nbsp;</span>And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, at Ophrah of the Abiezrites.</p>
<p id="p07008033.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07008033-1">33&nbsp;</span>As soon as Gideon died, the people of Israel turned again and whored after the Baals and made Baal-berith their god. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008034-1">34&nbsp;</span>And the people of Israel did not remember the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> their God, who had delivered them from the hand of all their enemies on every side, <span class="verse-num" id="v07008035-1">35&nbsp;</span>and they did not show steadfast love to the family of Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) in return for all the good that he had done to Israel.</p>
<p id="p07009001.03-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v07009001-1">9:1&nbsp;</span>Now Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother&#8217;s relatives and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother&#8217;s family, <span class="verse-num" id="v07009002-1">2&nbsp;</span>&#8220;Say in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, &#8216;Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?&#8217; Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p07009003.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07009003-1">3&nbsp;</span>And his mother&#8217;s relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, &#8220;He is our brother.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009004-1">4&nbsp;</span>And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009005-1">5&nbsp;</span>And he went to his father&#8217;s house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009006-1">6&nbsp;</span>And all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem.</p>
<p id="p07009007.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07009007-1">7&nbsp;</span>When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on top of Mount Gerizim and cried aloud and said to them, &#8220;Listen to me, you leaders of Shechem, that God may listen to you. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009008-1">8&nbsp;</span>The trees once went out to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, &#8216;Reign over us.&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009009-1">9&nbsp;</span>But the olive tree said to them, &#8216;Shall I leave my abundance, by which gods and men are honored, and go hold sway over the trees?&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009010-1">10&nbsp;</span>And the trees said to the fig tree, &#8216;You come and reign over us.&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009011-1">11&nbsp;</span>But the fig tree said to them, &#8216;Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit and go hold sway over the trees?&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009012-1">12&nbsp;</span>And the trees said to the vine, &#8216;You come and reign over us.&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009013-1">13&nbsp;</span>But the vine said to them, &#8216;Shall I leave my wine that cheers God and men and go hold sway over the trees?&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009014-1">14&nbsp;</span>Then all the trees said to the bramble, &#8216;You come and reign over us.&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009015-1">15&nbsp;</span>And the bramble said to the trees, &#8216;If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade, but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.&#8217;</p>
<p id="p07009016.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07009016-1">16&nbsp;</span>&#8220;Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and integrity when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house and have done to him as his deeds deserved&#8212; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009017-1">17&nbsp;</span>for my father fought for you and risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian, <span class="verse-num" id="v07009018-1">18&nbsp;</span>and you have risen up against my father&#8217;s house this day and have killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the leaders of Shechem, because he is your relative&#8212; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009019-1">19&nbsp;</span>if you then have acted in good faith and integrity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. <span class="verse-num" id="v07009020-1">20&nbsp;</span>But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the leaders of Shechem and from Beth-millo and devour Abimelech.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07009021-1">21&nbsp;</span>And Jotham ran away and fled and went to Beer and lived there, because of Abimelech his brother. <p id="p43003025.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43003025-1">25&nbsp;</span>Now a discussion arose between some of John&#8217;s disciples and a Jew over purification. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003026-1">26&nbsp;</span>And they came to John and said to him, &#8220;Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness&#8212;look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43003027-1">27&nbsp;</span>John answered, &#8220;A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003028-1">28&nbsp;</span>You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, &#8216;I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.&#8217; <span class="verse-num" id="v43003029-1">29&nbsp;</span>The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom&#8217;s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003030-1">30&nbsp;</span>He must increase, but I must decrease.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p43003031.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43003031-1">31&nbsp;</span>He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003032-1">32&nbsp;</span>He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003033-1">33&nbsp;</span>Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003034-1">34&nbsp;</span>For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003035-1">35&nbsp;</span>The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. <span class="verse-num" id="v43003036-1">36&nbsp;</span>Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. <p id="p43002001.05-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v43002001-1">2:1&nbsp;</span>On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. <span class="verse-num" id="v43002002-1">2&nbsp;</span>Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. <span class="verse-num" id="v43002003-1">3&nbsp;</span>When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, &#8220;They have no wine.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43002004-1">4&nbsp;</span>And Jesus said to her, <span class="woc">&#8220;Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43002005-1">5&nbsp;</span>His mother said to the servants, &#8220;Do whatever he tells you.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p43002006.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43002006-1">6&nbsp;</span>Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. <span class="verse-num" id="v43002007-1">7&nbsp;</span>Jesus said to the servants, <span class="woc">&#8220;Fill the jars with water.&#8221;</span> And they filled them up to the brim. <span class="verse-num" id="v43002008-1">8&nbsp;</span>And he said to them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.&#8221;</span> So they took it. <span class="verse-num" id="v43002009-1">9&nbsp;</span>When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom <span class="verse-num" id="v43002010-1">10&nbsp;</span>and said to him, &#8220;Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43002011-1">11&nbsp;</span>This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.</p>
<p id="p43002012.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43002012-1">12&nbsp;</span>After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.</p>
<p id="p43002013.05-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43002013-1">13&nbsp;</span>The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. <span class="verse-num" id="v43002014-1">14&nbsp;</span>In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. <span class="verse-num" id="v43002015-1">15&nbsp;</span>And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. <span class="verse-num" id="v43002016-1">16&nbsp;</span>And he told those who sold the pigeons, <span class="woc">&#8220;Take these things away; do not make my Father&#8217;s house a house of trade.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43002017-1">17&nbsp;</span>His disciples remembered that it was written, &#8220;Zeal for your house will consume me.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p43002018.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43002018-1">18&nbsp;</span>So the Jews said to him, &#8220;What sign do you show us for doing these things?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43002019-1">19&nbsp;</span>Jesus answered them, <span class="woc">&#8220;Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.&#8221;</span> <span class="verse-num" id="v43002020-1">20&nbsp;</span>The Jews then said, &#8220;It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v43002021-1">21&nbsp;</span>But he was speaking about the temple of his body. <span class="verse-num" id="v43002022-1">22&nbsp;</span>When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.</p>
<p id="p43002023.07-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v43002023-1">23&nbsp;</span>Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. <span class="verse-num" id="v43002024-1">24&nbsp;</span>But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people <span class="verse-num" id="v43002025-1">25&nbsp;</span>and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man. <p id="p07008001.06-1"><span class="chapter-num" id="v07008001-1">8:1&nbsp;</span>Then the men of Ephraim said to him, &#8220;What is this that you have done to us, not to call us when you went to fight against Midian?&#8221; And they accused him fiercely. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008002-1">2&nbsp;</span>And he said to them, &#8220;What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the grape harvest of Abiezer? <span class="verse-num" id="v07008003-1">3&nbsp;</span>God has given into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. What have I been able to do in comparison with you?&#8221; Then their anger against him subsided when he said this.</p>
<p id="p07008004.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07008004-1">4&nbsp;</span>And Gideon came to the Jordan and crossed over, he and the 300 men who were with him, exhausted yet pursuing. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008005-1">5&nbsp;</span>So he said to the men of Succoth, &#8220;Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me, for they are exhausted, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07008006-1">6&nbsp;</span>And the officials of Succoth said, &#8220;Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07008007-1">7&nbsp;</span>So Gideon said, &#8220;Well then, when the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will flail your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07008008-1">8&nbsp;</span>And from there he went up to Penuel, and spoke to them in the same way, and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008009-1">9&nbsp;</span>And he said to the men of Penuel, &#8220;When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.&#8221;</p>
<p id="p07008010.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07008010-1">10&nbsp;</span>Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor with their army, about 15,000 men, all who were left of all the army of the people of the East, for there had fallen 120,000 men who drew the sword. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008011-1">11&nbsp;</span>And Gideon went up by the way of the tent dwellers east of Nobah and Jogbehah and attacked the army, for the army felt secure. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008012-1">12&nbsp;</span>And Zebah and Zalmunna fled, and he pursued them and captured the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and he threw all the army into a panic.</p>
<p id="p07008013.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07008013-1">13&nbsp;</span>Then Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle by the ascent of Heres. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008014-1">14&nbsp;</span>And he captured a young man of Succoth and questioned him. And he wrote down for him the officials and elders of Succoth, seventy-seven men. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008015-1">15&nbsp;</span>And he came to the men of Succoth and said, &#8220;Behold Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you taunted me, saying, &#8216;Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are exhausted?&#8217;&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07008016-1">16&nbsp;</span>And he took the elders of the city, and he took thorns of the wilderness and briers and with them taught the men of Succoth a lesson. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008017-1">17&nbsp;</span>And he broke down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city.</p>
<p id="p07008018.01-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07008018-1">18&nbsp;</span>Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, &#8220;Where are the men whom you killed at Tabor?&#8221; They answered, &#8220;As you are, so were they. Every one of them resembled the son of a king.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07008019-1">19&nbsp;</span>And he said, &#8220;They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> lives, if you had saved them alive, I would not kill you.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07008020-1">20&nbsp;</span>So he said to Jether his firstborn, &#8220;Rise and kill them!&#8221; But the young man did not draw his sword, for he was afraid, because he was still a young man. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008021-1">21&nbsp;</span>Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, &#8220;Rise yourself and fall upon us, for as the man is, so is his strength.&#8221; And Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.</p>
<p id="p07008022.03-1"><span class="verse-num" id="v07008022-1">22&nbsp;</span>Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, &#8220;Rule over us, you and your son and your grandson also, for you have saved us from the hand of Midian.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07008023-1">23&nbsp;</span>Gideon said to them, &#8220;I will not rule over you, and my son will not rule over you; the <span class="small-caps">Lord</span> will rule over you.&#8221; <span class="verse-num" id="v07008024-1">24&nbsp;</span>And Gideon said to them, &#8220;Let me make a request of you: every one of you give me the earrings from his spoil.&#8221; (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) <span class="verse-num" id="v07008025-1">25&nbsp;</span>And they answered, &#8220;We will willingly give them.&#8221; And they spread a cloak, and every man threw in it the earrings of his spoil. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008026-1">26&nbsp;</span>And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was 1,700 shekels of gold, besides the crescent ornaments and the pendants and the purple garments worn by the kings of Midian, and besides the collars that were around the necks of their camels. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008027-1">27&nbsp;</span>And Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah. And all Israel whored after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his family. <span class="verse-num" id="v07008028-1">28&nbsp;</span>So Midian was subdued before the people of Israel, and they raised their heads no more.
